As a kid, Coach Smith was cool, and loved the game of Baseball which he played every day even in the winter. He was a second baseman and was known for his hustle and tenacity.
As an adult kid, at 19 he began coaching baseball on the Turkey Thicket playground. He has coached all levels including T-ball, Little League and Babe Ruth. He was the Coach for CYO at St. Josephs School in Beltsville, the College Park Boys and Girls Club and Coach of New Carrollton Babe Ruth.
Coach Smith was also an official Umpire working the fields for 10 years in the DC area and in Columbia, SC for High School, Little League and Boys Club levels.

Ed Smith is the Varsity 1st Base and Catchers Coach. As a man of many talents, he commands respect wherever he goes and quickly becomes everyone's best friend. His style and graceful disposition brings a touch of class to the game. He makes the game fun and meaningful. He was born and raised on the Turkey Thicket playground of N.E. Washington, D.C. and attended St. Anthony's Catholic School for 12 years, graduating in 1962. Moving on to College, he attended the University of Miami and Graduated at the University of Maryland. Coach Smith is a Distinguished Vietnam Veteran. In 1968, he entered the Army as an Army Officer and served 4 years in Vietnam as an Infantry Officer. In 1972 was honorably discharged as a Captain. We honor him for his years of service and the remarkable sacrifices he made for all of us and our great country during a very difficult time.
Before joining the McNamara Coaching Staff, he was Assistant Coach for the DeMatha HS Baseball Team for 8 years which won the WCAC title in 3 consecutive years.
He just completed his 8th year as Assistant Coach of the Greenbelt American Legion Baseball team, which won the Maryland State Championship in 2002 and Runner-up in 2003.
Coach Smith enjoys teaching the game of Baseball to young men. As a mentor, to teach them respect and discipline which helps them achieve their goals and succeed in life.
As a Thespian, he frequently works area stage performances by projecting his high energy vocal style and dancing skills.
